莎拉(珍妮佛安妮斯頓飾演)為紐約時報擔任「寫訃聞」的記者，由於一直懷疑自己的身世並對婚姻產生恐懼的她，在答應男友的求婚後卻遲遲未決定，在參加了妹妹的婚禮時卻打聽到母親婚前的私逃的行為，於是便想找出他的親生父親。
喜劇的劇情免不了誇張的情節，結果祖孫三代都無法抵擋的了莎拉母親秘密情人的吸引力。就像他們的對話…….
Sarah：Maybe every girl in my family has to sleep with you.
Beau Burroughs：I don’t know if they have to, but they certainly have.
而一直扮演有點「烏龜」角色的莎拉之父，卻是一直包容著莎拉之母當初婚前私逃的行為，甚至最後碰到當初莎拉之母的秘密情人(Beau Burroughs)，仍假裝不知情並寬容對待這位「狠」角色，這令我想到影級神鬼禁區（The Dead Zone），強尼未婚妻改嫁的對象也同樣善待非己所生的兒子之偉大情操。
在影片最後，莎拉從父親的口中知道了自己的真實身世，令我最感動的莫過於以下他們倆的對話：
Sarah：Daddy, I don’t understand. Why we are so different?
I mean I do not like tennis. I drive like I am crazy
But you drive so slowly.
Sarah’s father：Honey, I drive slowly, because you are in the car
而未婚夫(Jeff)知道莎拉曾被著他與萬人迷(Beau Burroughs)有一夜情後，當然怒不可赦。因此，莎拉只好負荊請罪啦!下面這段對話更是經典。
Sarah：I want to marry you.
I’ll marry you next month.
I’ll marry you this week.
I’ll walk out this apartment right now and I’ll marry you.
Jeff： It doesn’t work that way. Okey ?
You can’t just walk in here now and tell me you can’t live without me except me to what?
What am I supposed to do with this, Sarah?
Am I supposed to make it alright for you? I can’t anymore.
Sarah：I don’t want you to.
I love you.
I didn’t come here to tell you that I cannot live without you.
